n 16 July Year 12 students at Wellington High School, Timperley had the privilege of meeting and interviewing three Holocaust survivors: Danny Herman, Lady Milena Grenfell-Baines, and Anne Super. Wellington school is part of the The Fed’s My Voice Guardians Project, where every year we select Year 12 students to become the Guardians of a local Holocaust survivor’s story. Pupils learn about each survivor, through reading their My Voice book and then have the chance to meet them to discuss their incredible lives. Jocelyne and Michelle accompanied survivors, alongside volunteer Martin Ailion.
The students’ thorough preparation for the interviews was evident in the insightful questions they posed. They created a relaxed and open environment, allowing Danny, Lady Milena, and Anne to share their experiences in a comfortable manner.
Andy Gerschler, head of history at the school said: “This opportunity provided our Year 12 students with an invaluable chance to connect with history on a human level. Beyond the facts and figures, they gained a firsthand understanding of the profound impact of the Holocaust and the importance of tolerance, remembrance, and standing against hatred. The lessons learned yesterday will undoubtedly stay with them for years to come.”
This visit marks a significant step for the My Voice Guardians, who will now complete their project by producing a final piece of work. This will commemorate the life of their respective survivor, to be displayed as part of our remembrance for Holocaust Memorial Day.
